A Presidential Visit

Fiona jumped to her feet and looked around. She gasped and pointed. “That’s the White House!”

Frederick nodded. “We’re going to the presidential reception to greet my friend, President Abraham Lincoln.”

Finley’s mouth fell open. He adjusted his hearing aid. “Did I hear you correctly?”

Frederick laughed. “Yes, you did.”

“A lot must have happened after you ran away,” Fiona said.

“Freedom isn’t free,” Frederick said. “Some people must fight for it. I dedicated my life to helping end slavery.”

Fiona and Finley stayed beside Frederick as they walked toward the White House. “I attended anti-slavery meetings in 1841,” he said. “I was asked to give my first speech. Most white people in the North had never heard a slave speak about what slavery was really like. My speech affected many people. The American Anti-Slavery Society gave me a job as a speaker.”

“That’s cool,” Finley said.

Frederick nodded. “For four years, I traveled to several states to give speeches. But not everyone wanted to hear what I had to say. People threw rotten eggs, vegetables, and even bricks at me.”

“That sounds scary!” Fiona said.

“I didn’t let anything stop me,” Frederick said. “I wrote a book about my life, started my own newspaper, and even met with President Lincoln to ask him to end slavery.”

“Wowza,” Fiona said as they walked up the steps to the White House.

A policeman blocked their way. “Black people aren’t allowed in the White House.”

“That’s not right!” Fiona cried.

“Tell President Lincoln I am here,” Frederick said.

Just then, President Lincoln walked by. He waved for them to come in. The policeman had to let them inside.

“Here comes my friend Douglass,” Lincoln said loudly, so everyone in the room could hear.

Fiona’s mouth fell open. Her eyes were as big as dinner plates.

President Lincoln grinned and shook Frederick’s hand. “There is no man in this country whose opinion I value more than yours,” he said.
